Hi Kim, so glad to see you are still shooting. This is very nice. I especially like the red bouy light and its reflection in that dark, lonely area. Foreground texture is cool too.

Beautiful composition and colors on this one. I wish that we had more time when we had come through Vancouver. That is Vancouver, right?
I agree that cropping the foreground some might be worth a shot.

Thanks so much for the critique Vincent! Even though you are picking on me, I like it! How else will I learn these things! *grin* I think the best idea for this one is to crop out more of the foreground as like you mentioned, it is a bit out of focus. That will also help remove more of the brighter fg so I won;t have to tone down too much. This was shot at f11 but the timing was more like 3-4 seconds... it was only about 5 minutes after the sun went down so there was a lot of light, I just chose to underexpose a little to bring out the blue colour. (although with camera on the tripod I'm not sure why I didn't just make it f16 or f22??!!!)

I agree with Vincent's thoughtful comments. It took me a few years to realize that to keep everything in focus, you should focus on the near object (hyperfocal distance) and then the far objects stay in focus. If you focus on infinity then even with a small f stop the near objects may be blurred. I must say I didn't find the foreground dominating or distracting, but it might be more obvious on a large print. Overall this has a professional look.
It took me a minute to realize that this is looking east, not west. It's a view I never had the pleasure of seeing. However it again brings back dreamy memories of the coast. Thankyou for posting.

Beautiful exposure. I'm not convinced as much of the foreground is necessary to include, but I think this could work in a variety of ways. I'd definitely experiment with cropping the image to explore other alternateives.

I really like the cool blue and purple tones to this Kim. The similarity between this bridge and those down around here is really noticeable. The reflections on the waters' surface are also well captured.
Nicely done as usual Kim :)

Nice soft blue tones here throughout. One reason the crop helps this Kim (in my opinion) is because the foreground is bit too bright for this scene, but even more importantly a bit too soft. I am surprised even at f/11 the depth is not better than this. It does have excellent potential in my mind, but I would like to see this at f/16-f/22 on a tripod. Usually with such a wide angle lens as you were using here, f/11 would be fine. Although now that I think about it, f/11 in this type of lighting would be a longer exposure than one second. Are you sure about f/11 Kim? Is it possible you started out at f/11 when there was more lighting, but as it became darker like this, the camera adjusted to something larger? That would certainly account for the lack of detail in the foreground. Now if this were a 10-20 second exposure, perhaps then you would be close to f/11 and have good depth throughout. Here is one darkened a bit through levels. I think by eliminating some of the brightness here, you take some of the emphasis off the weaker elements as well as add a bit more atmosphere. Or a little lesser crop than posted above would still work to improve this one in my mind as well.
By the way, your work Kim is looking outstanding. You have really grown as a photographer... (even though I might sound like I'm picking on you here...

I love this shot. The night time lights are beautiful. Is this the bridge into Vancouver? I might've cropped the bottom (shore) as the light bounce is a little distracting off a couple of the rocks. But that's just my HO and you have a wonderful shot. :) Thank you for your comment on Balancing Act.

Great shot, Kim though, like one or two other people, I might have preferred slightly less land at the bottom of the picture. (On the other hand, it did form a sort of balance to the expanse of the night sky in the top half.)

Thanks Petal! I like your crop, and I like the idea of framing it like that... it's a beautiful presentation. I was thinking of printing it as an 11x14 but am now thinking that 9 x 14 would work better. Thanks for the suggestion!

I won't say there is too much blue in this slide :-) It is beautiful but I think Petal has a good point about a little too much foreground.

Super night shot!!! Beautiful colors and reflection, great composition... well done!! The only but I have is: I like the foreground but there's a bit too much of it IMHO, so cropping it might be an idea... (had a go at it and also framed it, hope you don't mind... have a look and tell me if you like it or not... :-)).

Absolutely gorgeous, Kim! This certainly shows why it's called the 'blue hour' :) Your composition is perfect, with the towers on the bridge dividing the scene nicely into 3rds and providing a great frame for the city in the distance. This really looks like it's lit by moonlight - especially the foreground. Brava!
