About Its not the best dragonfly image for sure but heres the story!
I wanted to take dragonfly photographs for a long time! But they always seem to face the swimming pool and when I try closing in on their face they fly away

So today while swimming there was this small dragonfly that kept coming back! But the only way to capture its face was to take it from inside the water

So I took the D70 in the swimming pool! No protection
Praying all the time that nothing happens and took some pictures

I know the details could have been better! But I was terrified!

So here it is! My first dragonfly pic!

Would someone told me how to take a better picture of a dragonfly?!

OMG! This is WONDERFUL Arwa! I am going to be soooo mad if you don't get some award for this. Are you serious about wanting a better idea? NO NO NO - you have a slice of perfection here. Love the color and the DOF is excellent. The whole thing is excellent! How did I miss this???

They are so fantastic to get a shot of aren't they. Last year I was lucky enough one was lazing in the sun on top of a pillar in the garden. Unfortunately he was not a 'pretty one' in fact I understand it was a damselfly - but I count it.
Margaret
Thank you for your comment on my 'nosey leopard - it made me smile' very clever

Dear ned!

Thank you so much!
next time insha'allah i will fallow your advice! :)
Cant wait to see what you come up with

hi arwa :)
i've been chasing dragonflys for a week now.
they generally stay still and even if they fly away they come back to the same spot!

personally i think the dof is too shallow here! a small aperture e.g. f/11 is essential for such maginfication. a small aperture would show the details of the wings.

taking a frontal view of a dragonfly is not a good idea .. i think .. especially in your case where the dragonfly is landing on the floor. a frontal view will end up with empty space above and below the fly cus of its long wings.
instead, try to shoot a side view or at an angle. a side view will make sure that head-to-tail will be sharp even at relatively wide apertures e.g. f/5.6.

avoid harsh lighting .. or in the midday when the sun light is really harsh and can cause high contrast which will cause reflections and wash out some parts of the insect's body .. especially these delicate fine lines on the wings.

before u click ,, make sure that ur little dragon is all in the frame .. don't crop out its wings.

well done for the high shutter speed, as ur not using a tripod!
personally i would retain the high speed of 1/4000 and increase the ISO speed to 400 so i can get a smaller apertrue (probably f/16).

oh .. sorry for the long comment .. perhaps i should zip it up :))

hopefully i'll post a dragonfly shot tomorrow.

regards,
ned

hello randy! :)
Thank you for your detailed comment on both images!
Its so thoughtful of you to notice and comment on its eyes!
Your right about the X factor!

Randy Lorance Randy Lorance   {K:24769} 5/5/2005
What a great first shot of a dragon fly, I've tried a little but tired of them taking off just as I was about to click! This has nice selective detail which I think adds to image. Especially like the blood red detail of wings and glisten on eyes. This photo has that X factor that makes an insect macro appealing.

Maybe different parts of the world and different weather regions have different dragonflys?? :)
thank you Michael for the comment!
don?t worry i'll be careful :)

I have never seen a dragonfly that color before, Arwa. Excellent photo, but PLEASE be very careful in the water. I'd hate for you to damage your camera and have us miss out out more of your great photos.

Maybe if I changed the aperture then more details would have been included? I didn?t need to go up to 1/4000 on the shutter speed didn?t i! oh well! Next time! I?ll get some glue as mark suggested and take pics :P
thank you saeed :)

Thilo I want to take THE perfect dragonfly image!
Something like this link ;)

http://www.usefilm.com/image/472314.html

Would I be asking for too much from myself?
maybe, but only a high standard like this would help me to improve my skills ;)

Mark I thought your joke was a genius idea!!!!! I just have to brainstorm some ideas of how to release it from the glow, is there such a thing as dragonfly food to start with? What dose it eat?
Thank you for the comment

arwa abdullah   {K:34415} 5/5/2005
latif what do you mean you lost it between friends! That?s awful! You can lose a DVD between friends but not a Nikon lens! Invite them all to your house luck the doors and ask them all in the face at the same time!
you cant just let this go!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great shot Arwa,,, really
We photographers loves this fly... it's stay steady for long enough to take the shot and even to change the lens... very cooperating...

60 mm wonderful lens,,, I used to have one but I lost it (between my friends :) )...

This a great example of the shallow DOF...

Best regards

Dear Arwa, This is a really nicw shot - very well done. I'll tell you the secret on how to get super Dragonfly pictures every time. Put some Dragonfly food by the pool and then put some glue around the food in a circle. When the Dragonfly lands he'll step in the glue and be stuck there........I'm still working on how to release him from the glue when you've gotten the shots- it won't take too long for me to figure out the rest :~> . (just a little joke - no glue. It's a sad world so we must laugh a little) Very well done, Take care, Mark

I think it's excellent for a start Arwa....
The head and the details of the wings are wonderful and sharp.
I usually do the same thing take my camera with me in the pool but not to capture dragon flies but to shoot my daughters while swimming :0) .... It's very dangerous but Allah beysallim :0)
My best regards,
Khaled.

Masa?a al khair!!! ;)
That?s such a smart idea erkoc!!!
What would I need to drug it? I read once in a book that to photograph insects you have keep them in a room with very low temperatures and their movement will become so slow!
