About
Sandy Hook Lighthouse taken from the water's edge on North Beach.
The light can be seen up to 19 miles away. The lighthouse stands next to (or in) Fort Hancock, which has been used since Revolutionary War times (until 1974) to guard New York Harbor (the Verazzano Bridge and New York City skyline can be seen from the beaches) and as a proving grounds for the U.S. Army. The lighthouse was completed in 1764 and is the oldest surviving lighthouse in the U.S. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and is now operated by the U.S. Coast Guard.
