Wow. Steve, that's a really COOL photo. (lol.) Unreal how the snow forms into shapes. You must have some wonderful snow scenes up there. I'd like to see it sometime but I don't think I could live there. I was born and bred in the tropics. Mind you I would prefer a slightly cooler climate in summertime. Cheers, Ann.

Lee, when I bought my first D2X, I was extremely disappointed with Nikon to want me to buy a $100 program to convert raw photos from a new $5000 camera. But, at that time, no other raw converter was available for D2X files. I bought Nikon Capture, and was even more disappointed when it brought my G4 laptop to it's knees when I tried to browse more than 30 files at one time. Bibble soon came out, and I found it to be much faster than NC, and it worked with larger folders of files, and batch processed fairly well. I bought Bibble, and waited eagerly for Adobe to make Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) work for NEF's. When Photoshop CS2 came out, they said it supported D2X NEF's, but as it turned out, it did not read the white balance as set by the camera. Now ACR2 does read the white balance. ACR works much faster than NC, and for most subjects I find the Tiff files it produces to be good. In some cases though, NC or Bibble seem to do a better job. I think basically what it comes down to is you'll still need to do some work on some images using any program. NC is the slowest of the programs I've tried/purchased. Bibble is very good, but I'm just not used to the interface. I had been using Photoshop with ACR for the past year, and knew that program the best, so naturally it's the one I still prefer to process the majority of my D2X files.

Hi Steve I'm curious if you have found a alternative to the Nikon Software. I've had my D2X now for a couple months and I shoot mostly in raw and at almost 20 meg per image it is a task in itself to go thru my images. I have beefed up my Pc and that did help but still very time consuming. Any tips ?

Sorry I missed this image but better late than never. I wish I could have had at least one winter in AK to have seen something like this. Say what do you mean long days? From what I experienced during my stay there was NO night. :O That was hard to adjust to and by the time I got used to it the days were getting shorter again. This image is amazing Steve. Makes for an awesome subject. Too cool....literally! Cheers - Ann :)

Manu, the sunshine in Alaska in early April isn't so intense, so snow photograhy isn't as difficult as it is at lower latitudes.

Houses must be built differently up there to compansate for the amount of snow!!! This is a great capture of "life in the north" that make some people wonder why anyone would want to live up there!

Thank you for the reply Steve. I hope to buy the D2X this year. I'm also not a fan of the Nikon software, alternatively there is the plug-in for PS and there is a freeware available called RawShooter essentials 2005, you might download and give it a try, at least there is a few options. Thank you for the reply and I hope you don't mind if I check back with you later before I buy mine.

spring with snow so deep, wow ! very nice capture, nice composition. I like how you capture the snow, the one on the roof has shown wonderful texture, while it's so smooth on the ground

Spring in deep snow country means having wonderfully long days with moderate temperatures so we can play in the snow with skis, dogsleds, or snowmobiles. We are gaining a bit more than 6 minutes a day of daylight, so the snow will go quickly as temperatures rise.
Lee, I've had the D2X for a little over a week. I'm pleased with the image quality, feeling it edges out my Kodak SLR/n in detail. I have not yet learned to "feel" what my lenses will do with the crop factor of the smaller sensor. For now, I find that somewhat annoying, but as I grow accoustomed to the crop factor effect, I'm sure I will love this camera. I do not like the Nikon software, and I've found a few problems with Bibble as a raw converter (it creates "multi-frame" tiffs, which screws up another program I have that I use to caption and keyword images using IPTC data)

Very unique Steve, I do like this. Have you had your D2X long enough to form a opinion of it ? Have a good day. Lee
