Great shot of the similar forms in different colors. I think the image would be better if the plant didn't get chopped off on the right so that it would have the same treatment as the left side of the composition. Looks like you had some diffuse light which helps in this kind of situation.

Hi Alison.
A bigger aperture means using an F-Stop of F/2.8 insead of F/5.6 for example. In macro mode, the DOF (deapth of field) is normally set to a maximum, and is great when you want to see everything close and far. Best it to try different F-Stops on a picture like this and see which one comes out best. Too little DOF can be unpleasing if part of the actual subject is blured together with the background.

Hi Bryan thank you for comment. Yes I agree blurring the backround would have improved the shot I think. You are right didn't think of it at the time. Will remember next time. Confirm to have a wider apature I would have to have a smaller F stop? Trying to see if I rememebr right.
I also agree about cropping out the top snail. Good idea didn't think of that either. :-) Live and learn.

Thank you for your insightful comments always a help and always welcome. :-)

Alison, I love this photo. Such lovely colours and detail. I think a wider aperture (if your camera could go wider - or possibly changing the setting to sport mode or similar wide aperture - not macro?) could have helped to blur the background better. I say this knowing that I probably wouldn't have done any better, but also as a point of discussion and something to think about if you remember for the next shot like this(easy to see afterwards). Anyway, an excellent very pleasing photo.
