It is okay Jan...that is what this site is for....to learn from each other. Actually other people have been learning from your same questions too, so you have helped others.
I am so pleased to hear that you are trying out new things with your camera. Once you get the feel of it, you will soar.
Good Luck.

Hey Judi...THANKS A BUNCH..sorry if I've turned this image into "Jan's lesson plan #1 and #2" hehe
You've been a great help! And I took your advice and got a few shots outdoors the other evening (Q-1, 2 & 3) Still just portraits, but atleast I'm getting a handle on my camera settings...thanks to you!!
I sure do appreciate all your help!! Jan

Hi Jan. I didn't forget your questions...LOL!!
Most of my gear is Sony brand. Unfortunately living in the country restricts what is available to me. I have some things that aren't Sony but the majority are.
Sometimes it is worth increasing your sharpness, contrast and colour. It seems to give the images that bit extra oomph!!
With regards to memory sticks and cards...I had alwqays heard that the sticks produced better quality results than the cards. I had always used sticks but a friend of mine had cards. So I put one of his cards in my camera as a backup. That way if I am in the middle of a shoot and I needed to change sticks I would just flick the switch over to CF and keep going. No more having to stop until I was able to.
It was during shooting a butterfly that I had forgotten that I was using the card. I took the images onto the computer and was very disappointed. I then went back out and photographed the same butterfly with the same conditions but using the stick and was quite pleased with the images.
I will do some research on the macro question for you and will get back to you.

Wow. Love your clouds here and the scene, I miss this one sorry dear Judi! Kiss, Biliana
Ps. I just read the information you gave to Jan about the settings. Thank you sweety, now I understand better the Sony, but still have a lot to learn. I will tell to my friend that he has to practice and shoot more and more to understand his camera, cause I am not so sure that I am going to be able to explain him all those details! Kiss, Biliana

WOW Jud!!! No one can ever accuse you of not being THOROUGH!!! Thanks alot for all the info! BTW...I do LOVE my camera, turned off the beeps and have been using it in full manual mode for about a month now. ;)... I think you may have misunderstood what I meant about not shooting outdoors because everything's grey...I mean LITERALLY, it's the end of winter here and there are no leaves on the trees, no green grass, EVERYTHING is literally grey and muddy and ugly. I live in the country, stay in the country, love the country, and really have no desire to go into the rather blah and ugly city I live near to shoot.
That said...the questions I still have are mainly about your equipment. Is all your extra gear Sony brand, specifically your filters and external flash? I never shoot with flash, hate flash shots, but would like a nice external flash, just in case.
Also, macro mode...do you know exactly what switching to macro mode does inside the camera...is it adding sharpness, dof, what exactly is changing in the camera settings?
I also shoot only in lower ISO settings, I understand the limits of this camera with the higher ISO's...I NEVER use any fancy settings and also have never tried raising contrast or sharpness, does it really help?
The one thing that REALLY surprised me is that you see a difference in details, between the memory stick and CF!! All I have are CF's, and this may prompt me to invest in some memory sticks, if you really can see a difference!
Again, thank you so much for taking the time to write me a short novel in response to my questions...I really, REALLY appreciate it!!
Cheers Jan

Okay, I am here.
Now first of all Jan, what on earth are you doing inside with your camera. Get out there girl. Yes it is cold...yes the skies are grey, but think about it. You have got a good camera there. Make it work hard. Grey skies....you could have great cloud formation. Grey skies, that means filtered light....great for photographing flowers and nature without the harsh glare, although sometimes you can get some glare...you just have to watch your subject. Grey skies....that means cold air. That means people are cold. That means great moody street captures of people bent over rushing to get indoors with reflections on the street from rain...! People's expresssions....girl think of the things that you are missing out on. Your camera can handle that plus more. Think of the animals and birds huddled over trying to get warm. Their expressions alone are worth it. Chuck some warm clothes on and venture out into the world that is waiting for you. Because people are huddled over, they are less likely to see you with a camera...which gives you more privacy to practise and get confident in street captures, especially with a new camera to get used to. Tilt the body of the camera back and place the camera against your belly and use the LCD to capture these scenes. I do that a lot and get the best expressions. I DON'T like soldier poses, so you need to be incognito. Find a park bench or a seat along the street side and sit there with the camera on your lap and just look around. When you see something you like, briefly look down and focus. Then press away whilst looking away from the camera. Don't use your flash.
Now with regards to camera equipment. I rarely use my flash unless I really have to. I use mostly an external flash as this gives better range.
I permanently keep a UV filter on the camera. This helps the glare and to protect the lens. You are using a Carl Zeiss lens...one of the best in the world. Do you know some of their lenses for microscopes are over a quarter of a million dollars each? So you have got one heck of a piece of equipment there. Treasure it.
I use a Polarizer whenever doing sky shots. Try it...it is worth it.
I use a Macro lens when needed. It doesn't bring it up much closer, but it does make it sharper.
I use a Raynox zoom lens. But I wouldn't recommend getting it. It doesn't do your photos any justice.
I also use a Sony tripod as this has the compatible remotes built in to the handle. If I feel that my pressing of the button on the handle will cause camera shack then I will plug in the Sony remote control to the camera and use that.
Settings, well, I have my favourites. I keep the ISO as low as possible at all times. I use mainly the 'M' setting on your dial. This allows me to alter the shutter and aperture as necessary. Unfortunately, it won't let me control the exposure settings so if this gets in my way then I will change to either Aperture or Shutter Priority, whichever is more important for that particular shot.
If you find the images are too dark then lower your shutter or open your aperture or increase your ISO. Try and avoid using flash as much as possible.
I tend to steer clear of the fancy modes like sepia and such. I feel that can all be done later when I view the image larger on screen. And I have more control over it.
Your LCD tends to show brighter than the actual finished image....so bear that in mind.
While you are getting used to your camera, keep your camera beeps on. Once you are familiar with the camera, turn them off. You will find you can sneak in a few extra shots without alerting the subject to what you are doing.
I find that your memory sticks gives you better detail, especially in macro, than your CF's. I also find that using the macro setting for anything within a few meters gives crisper details.
Try increasing your Sharpness, Contrast and Colour as this will show through on your final image.
Also for sunsets put your camera setting on landscape as this brings out the colour in the skies a lot more, especially the reds. Just look in my portfolio under sunsets/sunrises. YOu will see some pure red sunsets. They are NOT enhanced.
For now, that will keep you pretty confused for a while. Let me know when you have more questions. I will certainly try and help you.

UNBELIEVABLE sky, Judi!! Okay, help a girl out...we have the same camera, but I just got mine in December, and as it is still cold and grey and ugly here, I haven't taken a single outdoors shot with it yet! Once I get outdoors this spring, what am I going to need, in terms of filters. In fact, I would love to hear about any additional gear you would recommend for the Sony...this is my first "real" camera, I consider you the USEFILM Sony f828 PRO!!
BTW, did I say "Gorgeous Shot!" ? Cheers Jan
