About These two couldn't get enough of preening and nibbling each other. Iliked it as a "different" photo of birds. I guess I could have shot more bird and less sky but was quite far away on tippee toe trying to balance as they were high up and I was trying to get a Level shot. Would like other ideas how to improve it oo.

HI Peter, I know what you mean about being an amateur and the hit and miss. I found this site very well written simple and easy to read. Even I understood it, Maybe it will help you too.

Wonderful Photograph Alison, Great colors and clarity and Composition.

Thanks for sharing? Thanks for the wonderful comment on my Photograph. Critique is alwasy welcome. Since I'm an unskilled photographer most of my good shots are by accident.

Hi Alison.

The ISO is the speed of the film. The higher the ISO, the faster you can make your shutter speed, assuming you keep the F stop (aperture) the same. But the photo will also get more ?noisy?, or grainy. Its best to use as low ISO as you can tolerate (before the shutter speed gets too slow and starts to show motion blur from your hands shaking). You can also increase the shutter speed by using a wider aperture (eg F2.8 instead of F5.6), but you also pay by getting less DOF, and sometimes a less sharp picture. With a film camera, you need to choose the film speed ? normally you choose ISO200 as it is good for general purpose use. With a digital camera, you can set it up manually for each photo. But you normally have to use one of the manual modes to do so. Best to check how to do it in the camera?s manual. In auto mode, the camera tries to choose the best setting for you, but doesn?t know what the circumstances are (e.g. are you using a tripod, do you want lots of Depth of field, etc). With practice you can choose the manual settings better than the camera can.

It probably sounds quite complicated, but with some practice, and experimenting with different values, you start to get a ?feel? for it.

A good book to try is ?Understanding Exposure? by Bryan Peterson ? this explains things very well and graphically. I bought a copy recently from Amazon ? very good.

Bryan

Sometimes the limitations we face when taking a shot cannot be overcome. I like the exposure on the birds. Wonderful moment. Unusual angle. Andree

Bryan you are too kind, thank you for the comments. Ok just translate for me in idiots terms again please "change the ISO" does that mean the f-stop and to make it slower would the number get higher or lower. The ISO isn't the shuttr speed is it?? lmao Please excuse my ignorance just can't seem to get the terminology under my belt..lol

A really cute composition, Alison. The pose and the framing are wonderful. Keep up the stunning photos.
