About Jan Ortman, a Nama goatkeeper in the harsh semi-desert of the Knersvlakte ( ..valley of gnashing of teeth). Reflected light from the bonnet of his pickup van (with 4 flat tyres). Exceptionally friendly and interesting character.

Excellent sharpness and great exposure using what was around...well done. My only comment is that I would like to have seen his chin a little more and maybe something/color in the lower left and right of the shot. The bottom of the frame seems to me, a little awkward.. trust you understand.

Many thanks for your comments and look forwards to more..

A beautiful portrait, Joggie. Nice tight crop, lots of details. A lot of the harsh environment and hard life he's had come through on a powerful image.

first, thanks for the good informed comment on my image, much appreciated. in your portfolio, this one really catches my eye. this has a real strong composition, use of textures and skin tones, and exposure. the one thing i notice that could be easily improved, is the white negative space in the bottom. a general rule of thumb with photography, depending on the situation, is to not leave tones of white on edges that match or are lighter than the border tones. just the slightest bit of burning in the bottom corner could really help unify this space as an interesting shape and fulfill your composition more, allowing the great skin tones and textures to pull forward even more. good luck. curtis

Thank you all for the generous comments - it made me speechless. I accidentaly loaded the wrong version, too tightly cropped and chin cut off. Will post the right one at a later stage. Thanks again for all comments. I appreciate it - love sharing the joys of photography.

i can actually feel the warmth of the sun.... well orchastrated Joggie.. the squinting is essential in this image, i believe, and the tones are perfect... each line of his face well defined, i am nearly speachless....nearly...:)
