About This is no special shot But is rather an experiment of the IS function of the lens I am using.
I am on the way home is 4:50PM overcast and very dark. Rounding the corner heading down the straight stretch, I see these deer going to cross the road so I pull over on the opposite side and up a ways from them. OK lets check out the IS !
I grab the camera try to focus and no dice ! the camera reports " NO CF CARD " well I guess we need one to shoot . I dig one out and about that time the traffic picks up. ( Others have left work early)
The deer retreat, but I hang on. after a few minutes, they reappear> I have the camera ready and stick it out the window and fire a few shots.
As I do I look at the screen in the viewfinder and see 1/40th of a second at f 6.3, This is not going to work !
Was I surprised when i got home and loaded the card into the computer.
As I said in the begining , this is not a great shot, usable but not great. however given the fact it was nearly dark, I was handholding the Lens at a 35MM equivalent of 640 MM with a shutter speed of 1/40th ;-) I think its pretty decent.
So the fun continues

What a gorgeous capture! They look so lovely! I also really like how some parts of the background is red, that's a really nice plus!

Pretty decent ? I think it is amazing !!!

This amount of detail at 1/40 is fabulous, testament to the camera/lens combo and a pretty good photographer to control the pair ;-)

Excellent photo Jim.

Best wishes,
Steve

I think it is more than usable Jim!
I think its a pretty good shot myself!
The focus is dead on and the exposure is great! There are no distractions and the red foliage is nice! Overall pretty darn good! Take care Jim!....................John

Jim: I allways leave the IS turned on. I have to learn the habbit of letting it engage before fireing the shutter. I have read that it can go into ossilation if using a tripod. I have only seen this once while steadying the camera on the car window. I have been using the 300mm with the Canon 1.4X II. The combination of the two is 420mm, I have had good results hand holding at 1/250th Not so good at 1/180th.

This shot was at 1/60th with the camera steadied on the car window.

How do I like the lens :So far so good, It has a learning curve, you need to know when to use the IS and when not to. It won't be as sharp as your Prime 300,I would guess but not a bad trade off for the options it gives me. I shot 300MM with my Nikon and if this one doesn't pan out thats exactly what I'll do with Canon.

Nice shot Jim. Looks like you just peeked up over a snow drifted and snapped one off. How do you like the lens? I just recently got the 300mm f/4 L IS USM

This is very good Jim and at 1/40th hand held....the IS sure did do it's job.
good composition and the colors are very good.
You have to love it when you get a pose like this....patience paid off for you here.

I think this is one time when you should be thankful of that snow Jim. Seems that whatever light there was has been reflected under the front one's chin and lit his body to great effect. IS has worked greay too, 1/40th @ 640mm and no sign of shake. Superb shot.

Jim, stop torturing me! Envy is a sin! I gotta put the words Canon and 20D out of my head?out of my head?out of head!
Wow, what an amazing shot in the circumstances!!
Best regards, Chris

:-)) You did extremely well, given all the "set-backs" you had to take this shot. How nice to see similar images from you and Lee this morning!
