It's because the head of the flowers cuts the line in the background .. if all background would have been "neutral" the effect would have been greater .. in such cases: if you can, hang a black coat (or anything else) behind the flower to act as backdrop ..

I think the flash worked very effectively. It all depends how much of the background you wanted exposed. The amount you have now works very well for the overall DoF, but it looks a little unnatural in the foreground. Overall, I think it's a very beautiful concept and nicely executed. Great job.
