About This photo was captured in Amr Ibn Al-As Mosque in old Cairo which is also known as Crown of Mosques or the Ancient Mosque.

The mosque is the first to be built in Egypt and Africa and was constructed in 642 AD.

Amr was the Arab general who conquest Egypt to fight against the Roman and he was hailed by the Copts as a liberator.

The original plan of the mosque was simple, following the model of the Prophet Mohamed's Mosque in Al-Madina Al-Munawwara. The ceiling was made of palm leaves and the columns were palm trunk. The mosque represents schools of architecture from different periods incorporating elements of Greek and Roman buildings, and has 150 white marble columns and three minarets.

Out of the hundreds of mosques in Cairo, the mosque has a special place in Egyptians' hearts, since it pre-dates Al-Azhar University by four centuries as educational institute.
