About Taken in the Oamaru Historic area. Many of the buildings are being restored to their former glory, but I prefer the slightly used look. I wonder where Guth Hedges is now?

Hi John!
I really like this old & patinated building capture! The colours, the textures, and the simply but great composition is excellent!
I glad to see your portfolio. I glad to see your very interesting part of your beautiful country New Zealand... :-)

Hi John, just looked at the first shot I put on this great site and there is a comment from you in January, thank you, have visited Dunedin and it reminded me of Scotland where I grew up. I like this shot very much, powerful and well executed I think, good work, glad you like the D70. thank you again, cheers, David.

Hi Debbi. I'm flattered you have added this to your favourites. I never tire of exploring these old building in Oamaru. I heard the other day that our government want this whole area to be given world heritage status. Thanks once again for your kind comments on my work. Regards John

Oh, Guth... Great shot, John - i agree with you in that i prefer the worn look of buildings such as these. They somehow hold more of a sense of history, of stories held within when they're not all so shiny & new looking. Wonderfully captured & composed!

Hi Tim, thanks for the comment. Yes I decided my film cameras were just losing value as they gathered dust, so bit the bullet before Xmas and traded-in my F5 and F100. Got the 12 - 24 mm as part of the trade.

I read quite a few reviews on the Nikkor and the Sigma equivalent. What swung the decision to the Nikkor was the ability to use my 77mm Filters, the lens size and Nikon glass holds it's price better.

So far the lens performance is great. Minimal distortion even at the 12mm end. I downloaded the free Photoshop CS plug in developed by Ptlens. A great piece of software that corrects distortion on a range of lenses. Even my old Canon G3. It does a great job on the Nikkor 18 - 70 mm. It's a fast download and the installation instructions easy to follow.

All we need now is some half decent weather to get out and use it. Our official weather records say that 2004 was the coldest year yet. So much for global warming.

If you ever get to NZ give me a shout. Would be more than happy to show you the South. You would find plenty to fill up a few cards.

Cheers

John

Hi John, the decaying, worn down textures are well captured. Heavily used look... Well balanced composition and all. It's just there. Wonderful shot.

Cheers,

Hugo

WOW what a fantastic photo John!
hey u got my next lens....it looks like it's a winner. I can't see any distortion at all. Or did you fix it in PS? The combinations of colors are excellent. Very exciting!
Seasons greetings to you too.
