Thanks, Ken. You are right...my monitor was a bit dark. I've recalibrated...you photo looks a lot better now! PS...I never did get the "reply" message (although I have that option turned on and it seems to be working). I just happened to look to see if there were further comments.

Actually, I was immediately drawn to this photo for exactly the mood you were trying to capture - " the contrast between the dark wet night and the welcoming warmth of the restaurant". The last time I was in Paris was a cold wet January and when I was standing on the street, all the restaurants looked so warm and inviting, just like this. :)

I'm repeating this because I failed to make it a "Reply to Lea Mulqueen" the first time:

To be honest, Lea, what I wanted to convey in the image was the contrast between the dark wet night and the welcoming warmth of the restaurant, which seems to be what Tamara is seeing. Without some darkness, it's just "a picture of a restaurant" and might better be taken in the daytime.

Is your monitor somewhat dark, Lea? On mine I see plenty of detail on the left side.

Tamara, you're right that the leftmost part with the two lights is not really essential, I just liked the balance a little better that way, purely a matter of taste.

I thought I agreed with Lea about the black on the left side possibly being distracting (when I saw her comment on the recent comment page), but once I saw the full size picture, I have to say that I think I like it the way you had it, with the length of the street showing and the person walking along. I think that some darkness in the background helps bring out the light in the foreground. However, perhaps you could still crop some of the left away - say, the left side of the street that has the two lights?

I think the impact of this interesting night scene is deminished by all the black on the left side.
I played with this a little. I lightened it some, corrected the perspective (leaning building) and cropped severely. Not sure if you'll like it..but it's only 1 persons opinion!
