About Union Station, in the fall and winter. The fall picture is by far the best shot that I'll post this year - it is a photostitch and is 6000 pixels wide.

The winter shot was taken the one night we had snow in KC this year.

Lily:

I hear you. I really do. The mistake is mine. After stitching all this stuff together I made the error of not leaving enough room on the Winter sequence, so I have to go in and artifically paint in the sky to make it match the porportions of the bottom.

I hate doing it, but when I do it takes a long time to get right and make it completely invisible.

Instead, I'm waiting for another snow day so I can go for a "do over".

Professional quality images. These are so beautiful. Every building is in crystal clear focus. I have an amateur question. Was there a star filter on the lens in the first picture? I see an attractive starburst pattern on one of the far left side glass buildings.

Only suggestion I can think of is the presentation. I realize the top picture is the more interesting image with the storm clouds and sunset, but my brain kept trying to stretch the plain blue sky in the winter picture down below. So you may want to try presenting them in the same dimensions with heights being equal as well as the widths

Hi Michael,

WOW...what an awesome image ....
I enjoy seeing the two seasons, and the coloring in each is wonderful! While I like them both, I think I favor the top one probably because of the time of day which gives such warmth.

Very creative, and wonderful perspective, no distortion...AMAZING.

EXCELLENT job,
Lori :)

It's a great work. I like to see places in different seasons and here you capture two great photos. In my opinion the top photo is more attractive because the sky it's very dramatic and the light is very excellent with the sun that drop down (I belive you shot at sunset).
Happy new year
Domenico

Congrats on your BIP. This is well deserved. Great concept and it's carried out flawlessly. On another note, I'm about to embark on a trip to Canada for a holiday with my D70 in tow. Will have plenty of photos with my new camera upon my return! Thanks for the hints on using a D70. I will certainly play with your suggestions. Happy Holiday to you and your family. -- Cheers from Carol.

Tim:

Sorry - not August, April.

There are a number of companies that sell the cleaning pads and fluid. All are expensive, so I wait until blowing air on my CCD still leaves spots and the PS work takes a long time just to remove them.

I don't do it often.

Here is what google brought back:

Hi Michael,

I didn't know you had your camera since Aug. that is the same time frame that I have had mine.
I have the cleaning kit and am rough on my equip as well for the same reasons...it goes everywhere I go, on the kayak, comercial fishing boats, hiking in the mountains...bla,bla. But I haven't done the cleaning yet as I was a little worried about doing the job. I am very good at that sort of thing but until now everybody I talked to said ooohhhhh it's very sensitive.....and don't screw up ....anyway it is good to hear that you have done it and so I will get it a shot too. I have 2 D70's to clean, they are in real need of it.
thanks for the explanation of your process it sounds great! I will give it a try to maybe soon. I am going to the Rockies this Xmas and that would be the place to try it.
Oh I don't know if you know this but I use ACDsee 7.0. as image software because it reads Raw files and can convert al at the same time. I found that Nikon software awkward and it sucked compared to ACDsee.

Tim:

The winter photo was assembled from 8 RAW files shot in portrait. I convert the NEF RAW to jpg in Photoshop, then assemble the panoramic in Arcsoft Panoramic maker. I save the resulting file as a jpg, and then use Photoshop to bring out the final composition. I overshoot by a bit, and then cropped these two images to the same view.

Long process, but the final stitched image boosts my origial 6 MP images to 18 MP for more detail.

I've cleaned my D70 three times since I got it in August. I'm hard on my cameras and do a lot of outdoor hiking with minimal lens changes. I am going to clean it again in two weeks.

hey Michael,

stunning image...one question did you shoot the original in raw?
Welcome to D70 world! one thing to be aware of though and I don't think this is exclusive to Nikon but to all digital SLR's and that is the fact that as the lens goes in and out it creates a vacuum in the internal part of the body and draws dust particles with it. So after awhile you may need to get the CCD cleaned. After only 3months I have dust bits on mine already. Oh you can get a cleaning kit and do it your self if you dare.
Excellent BIP!

John:

I've only printed the top "Fall" image. I got a 30" x 20" print for around $23 US from ezprints.com, with excellent results (Fuji Archival). I have ordered a larger 30" by 40" print and should be able to remark on the quality soon.

I sold the first print to a work friend at cost. I'd like to make some money, but am not a professional and do not even know where to begin to market photography. I've spoken with a friend about starting to license my images in KC, but I am a total newbie. Suggestions welcome one on one at mkanemoto at gmail dot com.

Congratulations on the BIP Michael. Impressive image. A lot of thought and work has obviously gone into this. Have you produced a large print? I'm sure you would be able to find a market for this type of creative picture. Regards John

To whomever awards these things on Usefilm:

Thank you for the BIP, it means a lot. Since I joined Usefilm this year I've noticed a real improvement in my photography, thanks to the help and the culture you have fostered.

With this positive feedback I'm hoping to continue to go back to this location and complete all four seasons with the addition of Spring and Summer.

Hi Michael, Very intriguing diptych, and an amazing difference in look and feel between the top and the bottom one. Creative stuff... Not sure why, but I would've placed the winter shot on top, maybe because it's lighter and cooler of tone, which falls more in line with expectations? Or maybe because of the difference in height of the two photos? A minor thing, which definately does not affect the quality of the individual photos.

Thanks for giving away the secret on how to mark the exact position of the tripod in the two photos; have to keep that in mind...

Cheers,

Hugo

Tom:

I'm an evil man using perspective.

I expand the legs of the tripod and set up two forward all the way to the edge of the overlook. the first time I set up, I wanted to get the flag pole out of the way of the architecture, so I lined it up with the corner of the building across the intersection. By looking at the top of the flag pole and counting the number of stories, I can get the right height to set the tripod as well.

Voila - I roughly get the same setup every time...

M, very nice! i like this one a lot. more than the triptych, actually. the contrast between the seasons is very interesting and creates a very nice contrast. i gotta ask, tho: do you have your tripod position marked in this spot? how do you manage to get the exact same perspective over time?

take care,
tom
