Larry if you saw my studio you would laugh. I got a large cardboard bos and slit down two of the corners so the front flap opens up and when it is sitting on a table the edge hangs over the table edge. I lay the material over it and position the setup for the light coming in the window depending how I want it. I have a powerpoint nearby to plug in my table lamps for extra lighting. If I need a higher back on the box (eg for flowers in vases) then I hang the material over the back of two chairs so it drapes across the ground. Under the material I will have a little portable step so I can sit the flower on top.
I am, as we speak, doing some light reflection shots and that is actually set up on my lounge.
So you see my friend. Use what is available and you will usually get very good results.

I didn't think you were the suit and tie person. Even so, you do well in a photo. You have to admit though, it makes it easier to see who you are chatting with..LOL!!

Larry, I do a lot of sewing, well used to, not many hours in the day now. I have cupboards loaded with materials. So I just used a piece of black knit fabric and hung it behind the subject. Don't use a shiny material that way the light is not reflected off the material.
