This is a penquill. You can find them on the Florida Gulf Shore beaches quite easily. They are an interesting shell in that when in the water, they are a target for all types of "hitchhikers" which, over time, causes them to look very ugly and deformed. Unless they spend some time in the ocean during a storm. It is then that the friction of the crashing waves polishes the penquill to a beautiful luster leaving an irredescent colorful shell, often referred to as "Mother of Pearl".
