Al, I really like this photo - look at those cheeks. The blurring - looks like some PS work? It works well here as no one would know this was a candid really. My 75-300 was very clear... :) I love the 50mm f/1.8 for this effect (and for a lens under $100 it's the best/most used in my bag). No work really needs to be done for the shots to look like this. Thanks for your comment elsewhere, I appreciate your insight on them.

I agree. With a bit less sharpening of the eyes, and a bit less softening though, this would be terrific! Great shallow dof and expression.

I like the idea Al but too much photoshop work IMHO. Eyes are over sharp and the rest of the image too much guasian blur. Prety child though.
