I think this herd is a bit more acclaimated to humanity.they have a range between the Yellowstone river and the mountain range which is about 1 1/2 miles on average. plus all the foothills, but there is a road that runs through it.
By nasty did you mean disposition ?

Good capture Jim These animals don't very often get close to us, they like there distance. I might add the nastiest tasting animal I ever hunted. Lee

Right now my trip looks like RMNP all the way up to Glacier. I have to scope it out to be sure it isn't too much travel and not enought shooting, I'll be on line along the way, so if you do " get the hell out" keep me posted ;-)

WOW great story....what can I say except that it seems that you are living in the wrong place .... well not wrong but somewhere this could be a everyday thing for you. Might just have to get the hell out of here and meet for coffee in the mountains or something. I really want some photos of the Larches so I have something more to paint during the winter months...not that we have snow or anything....but it does slow down over here.

They are beautiful creatures. I have never been very close. From the car on the road to over the fence but if I stop they are gone. Don.

Tim I am like Dr Dolittle I believe that animals can sense a reason to fear you and if there is no reason they don't.;-) Actually I ran into a fellow in yellowstone 2 years ago from Bismark North Dakota. He was photographing elk where I was one evening and we started to talk. I explained that I would really like to get close enough to antelope to get some decent shots and he said " that not hard here is how ". the rest is history.
Oh, you would like to know how someone as big as me can get within 50 feet of wild antelope ? Just walk up to them, SLOWLY. never disappear nto a gultch and reappear. stay in sight. Move slowly. put your tripod ahead of you and take a couple steps up to it.
The first time I tried this not only did I get close, the darn buck laid down ! My final shot at 300 MM was a head shot, thats all I could get in the frame. Antelope are the most inquisitive animals and rely on thier speed to escape.
The second morning I was up and out on the prairie before sun up. I spotted a group about 1/2 mile away I had a hot cup of coffee clipped to the tripod and I headed out. 1 hour later I was amoung them and accepted, however the buck came along and wanted no part of all those does hanging out with me. He carried on and finally ran off and showed up an a distant mountain over a mile away, he then circled me along the foothills with yet another doe He picked up. he brough her into the harem to persuade the rest of them to leave. finally they ambled off. It was an incredible experience. jc

Look at those eyelashes! :-) Great opportunity Jim - stunning focus and DOF. I love the way you have the grass popping and crisp.
The marks on his sides - do you think that would be from scuffling with other males for territory?
Linn
