From the three I like this the most. I like how everything fades away. Good atmosphere. C.

Hi Stefan, the element that interests me most in this shot is the effect created by the DOF; by placing it in the lower left corner, and quite in front of the scene, I think it works amazingly well in opening up the composition. It also adds a strong tension to the shto. Very interesting choice, but I think it works very well here...
Cheers,
hugo

stefan, this is the strongest of the three. although my favorite is No. 3 for it's simplicity in geometry and style, this is still a more compelling shot. excellent dof. i believe that this is the crucial aspect that makes this photograph. the focus on the knot and a "veil" cast on the remaining image, along with the square formatting, creates "tension" (as hugo would say) and puts in perspective an image that could easily be lost had the background been any sharper. very well done! me likey ;^)
take care, tom

That knot in the log is really a great point of foucs... it has both depth and mystery. I really like the DOF with the log disappearing into the background although I wonder if a little burning in the area behind the knot would even out the image to make the foreground more powerful. It would be something to try, but perhaps the reason why this works is because of the tension that the shadows in the foreground and the light in the bg create. Congrats on a successful B&W forest shot... I can never make them work!
