Dear Mary Sue,
The starbursts are real... sort of. I'm not sure why but whenever a digital chip (or at least my kind of chip in the D100 is focused on a bright point source (e.g. the small sun in a wide angle shot) a starburst pattern forms. This doesn't happen in film and is similar to the old crosshatch etched starburst filter effect.

A photo that I would surely try to get if it would only freeze here...we had snow last year, so we probably aren't due for a while.

Did you use a filter or some PS action to get the little starbursts or is that a natural function of the lens and light refracting through the ice?

Excellent macro nature image. Fine lighting, wonderful details (sparkling points are just super) very well composed with perfect metering of the light. Inspiring photographic work.
