John,
I forgot to tell one more secret, well actually none of this is a secret, it's just knowledge of photo editing. If I determine an image is not a candidate for neatimage and the image has enough noise that I think will detract from the images appeal, I use one more editing tool. I don't use Photoshop, I use Corel Photo Paint 10. It has many similar features as Photoshop. Go to Effects, Blur, Smart blur and set the amount to 3. That removes the majority of noise from the entire image without sacrificing image quality. I use the blur tool on the 25% of my images that can't be run through Neatimage.

John,
Neatimage is a really great tool for removing background noise. It only works on certain type images. It suits my style of photography perfectly. Let use a macro image such as this bee on coneflower. The background being totally out of focus with no distinguishable features. This is an image where Neatimage works its magic. I can run about 75% of my images through that program. You just have to play around with each image and soon you will learn before even trying neatimage which images are a candidate for Neatimage.

I was going to email you but I think this is and instructive conversation to have for others... Is it safe to assume then that you like this software better than unsharp mask in PS? Also while we are at it, Neatimage. Have you had issues with it making an image soft? I've heard good and bad things about it. Based on your images I'd say sharpness is not an issue.

Thanx for answering so rapidly I'll try the steps for sure

Ronnie Gaubert   {K:3700} 7/5/2004
First to answer Arwa's question; Yes it results in a better image. How much better is difficult to determine.
John,
I was afraid you were going to ask that question because I can't really answer it. The reason being is I don't resize and sharpen in Photoshop. I use a program called PhotoCleaner that I purchased and downloaded off the internet. You set the sharpening on a slidebar and type in the downsize amount. I just set the sharpening on the lowest setting and leave it there for each downsizing.

Hii
brilliant image! congratulations for the staff choice award 7/7
can I ask u a question are those steps better than editing it on Tiff 3000 x 2000 pic then resizing it all at once?
I do all the editing on the bigger size then resize it and turn it to JPEG

John Barclay   {K:3650} 7/5/2004
Now it's starting to make sense. I have heard about this approach before but have not tried it. I'm guessing that with film I should take my raw scan and do the same thing you are doing. So the last bit of info I'm interested in is. What settings in PS do you typically use on each unsharp mask?

  0

Ronnie Gaubert   {K:3700} 7/5/2004
John,
All my images are captured in Raw and converted to Tiff. I perform all editing in Tiff until the final downsizing and sharpening. In that final downsize is when I convert to Jpeg.
What I meant by step down is as follows:
For example, starting with a full size image 3000pixels x 2000pixels= 6mp image (max on D100)
To upload to Usefilm you must get down to maximum of 800pixels on the longest side.
(PS: I sharpen in each downsize, but only very little.)
1.First downsize is from 3000pixels to 2400 pixels wide.
2.Second downsize is from 2400pixels to 1800pixels.
3.Third downsize is from 1800pixels to 1200 pixels.
4.Fourth downsize is from 1200pixels to 800pixels.
Now remember the image is still a Tiff file, that's very important because if in Jpeg everytime you save, reopen and save in Jpeg you will be compressing the image. The above steps will ruin a jpeg image.
5.If necessary I will then run through Neatimage to remove background noise and sharpen one more time. Then the image is saved as Jpeg.
Note: If I'm not going to run the image through Neatimage, then after step four I will convert to Jpeg in that stepdown.
*************
I hope this all makes sense to you. If not, send me an email message and we can discuss in more detail.

I agree with the secret... I always use mirror lock up and a tripod etc... So are you posting a jpeg or tiff file? Could you be a bit more specific regarding the step down?

John,

First secret is not a secret; You need to have a sharp image out of the camera.
Second: Always working in Tiff I downsize and sharpen in steps until I reach the 800 pixel requirements on Usefilm.com.

Wonderful as always Ronnie. Do you have a formula that you could share for your use of USM?
