Interesting debate building here Angelo! Agreed, it can be confusing, and it's all a remnant of colonial times. Ireland (Republic of Ireland)is independant and not part of GB/UK unlike Northern Ireland. You will hear talk here now of the fact the Scotland, NI and Wales all have limited devolution from Parliament whereas England does not! It's all a bit bizarre really. Far right English nationalism does not embrace Scots, Welsh or Irish and is quite distinct from any historical references to British imperialsm. So, as for the first question, yes, it is perhaps the darkness of the photo which unintentionally calls to mind those far right connotations of the flag now happily receding.

Another thing on the back of your comment, Ian. I've lived in the UK for over 16 years, so I know how it works. But for most people from the outside it seems terribly confusing to have one country (The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) that is in fact formed by many different nations (English, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish) with their own flags, anthems, some of them with their own autonomous governments, national football teams, rugby teams (except for Ireland, of course, another idiosyncrasy). Funnily (and confusingly) enough, it is Great Britain that participates in the Olympics (but I believe that indludes N.I.?)
So I can well sympathise with Jorge when he confuses England with Britain. Even the BBC seems to get confused sometimes, as when an athlete wins he is a Britton, but when the same athlete loses, he is a Scot or a Welshman :)

Thanks for your excellent comment, Ian. It was certainly not my intention to depict the house as a far-right stronghold! Why does it deliver this message? Is it because of the darkness of the B&W part?
Lots of houses and cars around my street have St George flags. To me, this was an innovative and fun way to show support for the country.

Until quite recently the flag of St George had become a symbol of hatred and xenophobia, and of course hooliganism, thankfully since the last World Cup and perhaps due a little also to the success in Rugby the flag has been reclaimed by ordinary decent people. This has to be a positive thing which might in time overcome the image associated with it evident in Jorge's comment here where he also confuses Britain with England. I no great nationalist myself but I certainly prefer that the flag represents a positive identity and sporting celebration as one might see with for instance Brazil, Italy or indeed Portugal. Anyway, a few years ago your photo would have screamed of a house owned by a BNP member, skinhead maybe, but now it could be any English family enjoying the summer mood, although I must say your PS treatment is much more reminsiscent of the former. Very well done, well thought...but unhappy end.Britons must assume arrogance is very impressive in newspapers and TV flashs, but in actual game, nobody is more impressed with. Queen Victoria?s time is over since a long time.I did not like some press comments, some players comments. The Spice boy, first must learn how to shoot penalties and not to blame the grass, the very same for all of them... Svend,
I checked this morning. The flag of St George still sits proudly in his front yard.
The vast majority of English fans seem to take these defeats in good spirits, perhaps with a sense of inevitability.
They are, after all, quite used to it :-)

A very timely addition and a swell photo, Angelo. It would've been just perfect had the owner been peeking out between the curtains as you took it. I wonder ... has he stomped his overly patiotic creation unto oblivion, imagining while doing so that Beckham lay at his feet? (Have passing drunks urinated on it? Pardon.) Sport sure brings out the tribe in people. Rgds, Svend

Um abraço pra você tambem, Luís. Como bom brasileiro, torci pelo Felipão.
Na Inglaterra ainda choram o "roubo" do gol anulado no último minuto. Peninha...
