Rawabi .. when you switch on the flash then the max. shutter speed is limitied to 1/200 sec. This is called the flash sync speed.
Supose you could exceed 1/200 sec. then you'll have a photo that's partially lit.

i don't do macro photography but i believe that if you need to have a higher speed than the flash sync speed (1/200 sec.) you should not use the pop-up flash .. use natural light source or a strong-enough lamp.

Perhaps you should try the same setup switching off the flash. Check the shutter and aperture suggested by the auto exposure system. if the light is strong then you should get a high shutter speed even at iso 100.

best wishes,
ned

thanx Biliana for the suggestion.. okay i tried the flash plus my original light and the room's lights.. AND the best I could get is 1/200!! it's driving me crazy...!!!
i'm not taking pix of dropping drops.. they're more like "just hangin' in there!!" lol

I wonder why everyone keeps telling me that the sigma should be faster than the canon..! today i tried Biliana's suggestion and i used the flash, removed the closeup filter, had all the lights in the room on AND two table lamps so close that they were almost burning my lens and NOTHING! the best I could get is shutter 1/200, f5.6 and ISO 400...! what am I doing wrong!? :-/

Oh .. is that sigma lens a macro lens???!!

closeup lenses can significantly drop the quality of the photo. if i had a macro lens i would have given the closeup lens to my daughter to use it as a magnification lens

As Paul has said .. that macro lens is faster than the canon kit lens.

i prefer the original composition.
i think you could have achieved a better reflection of the rose.

keep trying Rawabi .. i'm looking forward to seeing the results :)

Excellent macro composition, really creative one, the colors and the details are wonderful, I know my comment is not adding anything extra, but any way .. i had to say excellent work, regards,

My dear Rawabi, when you are doing drops, I think that y ou need to use the flash built-in, to froze the water/drop, otherwise you have to use 1/2000 shutter speed, because of the speed of the drop falling down ;-)
Watch for my Bear drop it is for you!
Kisses, Biliana

Thanks Biliana...
I don't even know where my tripod is anymore! lol.. no i placed the cam on the table and held the dropping thingie in front and started shooting..! the blurriness is due to my shaking hand.. i don't believe in flash so I used two table lamps with powerful lights for assistance.. apparently I'll need to get another one..!!!!!! :-/

This is very beautiful and great for your first attempt on drops dear Rawabi, but it is kinda out of focus! Very amazing as you have close-up lens.
Did you use a tripod? a flash?? did you have extra aside lighting??
and I like it better without cropping, also you lost your sharpeness by cropping it!
Kisses, Biliana

PS. is a DROP competition started yet? ha ha.. Today I am posting 3 Drops and One for you dear Rawabi!!!

Very good close up Rawabi! It is more like an abstract than a macro. Cheers.

lol Arwa if you want more comments you should leave four times as many..! :P
the blurriness wasn't cuz of my shaking camera.. my cam was placed on the table but my hands were shaking while i was holding the drop..! i have very shaky hands and the aperture was only 2.8 which means that it kept falling in and out of focus! :-/
regarding the rose.. to be honest it wasn't intentional..! i just discovered that after my photo session was over.. planning to try again today inshalla :)

Salam rawabi

Water and drops are fascinating aren?t they :)

Where u using a tripod? This drop pic is unique because of the blur but u might want the drop to be sharper in the next pic.
Was this taken in the bathroom?

About the roses reflection if u haven?t said what it was I wouldn?t have guessed, maybe if u moved the rose behind the drop and used lower aperture and flash u can get a clear reflection of it inside the drop?

Im just brain storming ideas hope u don?t mind :)

P.S. I also check my mail for comments from home before I go to work and as soon as I get to work
But I don?t get the number of comments your getting masha'allah

As it is the first one, I like the softness and the results, if you did not mention it is a drop I would've thought a melted metal, Saeed

Nice try Rawabi, Last night I was trying the same ;-) but gave up as my drops fall too fast. I agree with Paul, I tried with the filter and ended up with not good foucs. Am sure you can get it without the close up filter only using the macro lens, cuz I tried it and it worked for me (will try to post soon)

well, as a drop shot it is not the best. i like drops to be sharp and clear, but what you got here is very special. in this case i really like the softness and the fuzziness.
well done. Uri

Rawabi, the 105mm needs more light than the 18-55mm? the 18-55 zoom lens is a slower lens, at least on paper, with a f/3.5-5.6 compared to f/2.8 of the sigma. Does the 105mm need more light when you are not using the filter? I would think that the 105mm would require less light than your 18-55 zoom, especially with the filter also on it. If what you say is true, makes me glad that I am sticking with a Canon Macro :)

So u will check ur comments from the office. just make sure u will not stop in the way to office by any internet cafe and check latest comments as well LOL.. sometimes i fall in suck things. about the original photo, now i am confused i think if crop in between not the original nor ur cropping. just very small space under the drop would be nice (its all to my taste) but what u did is better than the original anyway.

Rawabi Al-Nuaimi   {K:15659} 6/15/2004
Thanks Paul for the suggestion.. yes I've been told this a hundred and thirty seven times but do I learn? noooo! lol
actually the reason is that the 105 mm macro is almost as powerful as the 18-55 with close up.. but needs three times as much light..! so if I wanted to take a pic without the closeup filter I'd better switch to the 18-55 + closeup filter..! :)

Paul's Photos Paul's Photos   {K:35235} 6/15/2004
i like the colors and lighting..may want the drop to form a bit more.. I like the reflection on the drop.

the 105mm is a macro right? not sure why you are also using a closeup filter.. it may effect your focusing. Would not think you would need the filter. You have a fast lens but the filter probably adds a stop or two. I would try taking the image without the filter and see what happens :)

Good morning rawabi, it seems u start up ur day with usefilm :) photography fever.. all of us! :) its a very nice shot.. i like its softness but i think it needed more space around the drop (space to breath) its tight crop (for my taste) but i really like colors and reflections. thanks
