About This butterfly is rather large and was very hungry, it stayed on this group of blossoms for several minutes allowing me to get several good shots. Handheld. Tripod just doesn't work in these situations very well unless you get lucky. ISO 400.

A solid color layer was added in PS to achieve the vignette which simplifies the subject in a more pleasing manner.

I love this one! The soft vignette is most pleasing. I learned another way to achieve this with making a new layer, do the same selection technique and then fill with the paint bucket in 'soft light' mode. There are also neat things you can acheive with the gradient tool in terms of mimicking narrow DOF/out of focus etc. Anyway, a poster image fer sure. Dreaming of flowers and butterflies up here in the cold North!

Hi Don,

by background I'm guessing you to mean the vignette. The background was just a light area out of focus and I added the vignette to simplify the image especially the foreground foliage which was darker and seemed to me to throw the balance off too much. The vignette is a light green color added as a solid color layer, then I use the oval marquee selection tool to select the center area I which to cut from the solid layer and then once the selection is made I feather it and cut (ctrl-x) the selection out. I use the opacity slider to adjust the amount of opacity I feel looks the best and......done! Takes a few seconds to do all that once you know what you're doing.

Hope this helps.

Robert

Stunning. The pastel colors plus the bg do an excellent job of making the butterfly stand out, and he backlighting makes the wings transparent.
