About This juvenile northern hawk owl isn't that attractive of a bird, but I wanted to post these images to show how dramatically one can change the background in a long telephoto shot by moving just a few feet. When you use long telephotos, people tend to concentrate on the subject, and forget about the blurred background. Pay attention! Backgrounds can make or break an otherwise great photo!

Tony, I think that was the lesson Steve wanted to give :)
I do think the owl in both shots is somewhat dark indeed.

Personally, I like the left one better even without considering the background. The entire composition is just that much more pleasantly weighted.

Steve.. thank you for posting this... it really shows us all to remember to look at all the possibilities before snapping the shot.

I entirely agree with you about backgrounds but I feel you could have given a better example.I find the white splodge behind the owl(a cloud perhaps?) somewhat of a distraction and the bird doesn't stand out enough from that background.
Both the owl photos and those of the ruddy tern seem to lack the usual, unmistakeable characteristics of your photography : razor-sharp definition and perfectly saturated colours-Your recent photo of the Ibis with red legs was a stunner.Maybe they didn't scan in well.
