Wow, this is mighty good. Everything seems placed just so (without seeming so). The grain and light kind of blend the ground into the horizon - lifting it up and flattening it. And the black trees seem to push the ground back down. The band of white at the top fits very nicely.

Andreas: Many thanks for the tip. In future I'm going to submit my B&W's as RGB's.
Marek: Thanks (and thanks to all) for the kind words. Yes, it looks better as a print, and still better as a big print. Some detail is inevitably lost at Web resolution. Here's a detail at 100% from the lower center. (The Biogon is a gem.)

dead, bleak barren. Awesome use of wide angle and high speed film. Really sets the mood. I think you made good use of the rule of thirds for the double horizon too - first is the ground horizon, second the distant forest's treeline. This shot would have great impact in a large format on the wall - I think we lose quite a bit of detail here...

I think this is the answer: the UF compressor oversharpens greyscale files but the RGBfile stayed untouched and uncompressed

greyscale here again, and sharp enough - I compared with your other posting you linked (its RGB) and if you allow I try to upload it here (unchanged) as a test if the UF compressor is too sharp for greyscale postings ... I enjoyed the photos of this series very much there, good lens and perfect details ...

perfect in all sizes: it's the mood which counts, imho

Thanks, folks. I'm pleased with the results I've been getting from Neopan 400 in TMax, even when (as here) it's rated at 1600. Behind a Biogon lens it has a luminous look that's quite different from the digital look I've cultivated till now. I find both suitable, though the B&W's don't offer much scope for my usual irony.
