Hi Stefan! My favorite is the the first one... The first hides and reveals enough details to create, somehow, a magic atmosphere along the landscape. I believe the format, 16:9 alike, has an importante role in the whole... The first has, to me, an extraordinary emotional appeal... gives me the wish to be there... In fact.... it goes to my favorites!... because it is simple, and tells me something about truth (don't even ask me why! eheheh)

You know, to be perfectly honest, I really like the original shot! I cerainly prefer it to the "alternative presentation". I suppose the whisps could use a bit more contrast, but as is, they're easily spotted against the soft, featureless overcast sky. The dual colours of the mountains add interest, but do not detract from the whisps.
I still like the black and white whisps you originally submitted. I think it's okay the mountains don't have detail because you cropped them to emphasize the clouds. The black and white submission makes for a great weather abstract, whereas the original is a moody and unique landscape shot.

Becky - the original detail in the clouds are between light and very light gray, not much to work with in order to bring out the wisps that caught my eye in the first place. When I stretch that small grayscale region to cover almost the full gamut of luminosity the ground becomes a silhouette and the sky above it becomes fully white (as you can see in the submitted image). In the alternative I ended up using the red channel (histogram adjusted) for the sky, and the green channel for the ground (with just marginally more contrast) but it is still hard to make a convincing composite of those two images. The rotate and crop of the final image was an attempt to show all the interesting cloud structure without having the sky or silhouetted ground dominate too much.
The storm veered east and we didn't get another drop of rain...

I think I'm leaning towards the first one, though it's a shame you had to lose detail in the mountains to get a perfect exposure in the sky. Still, I think it's worth it as the second photo has subtler (is that a word?!) grey tones and a contrast that's not as dynamic. The clouds in the first photo are amazing! They look like smoke (or maybe even some of your refractions?) and are very unique. So why is this photo cropped so severely? Was it cropped from the bottom to prevent the landscape from overwhelming the sky? It would be nice to see more of that sky!

Very beautiful panoramic nature image Stefan. I like this one more than the alternative presentation. Wonderful silhouettes of the hills and tones in the clouds. Great how the form of the clouds are mathching the form of the hills ore the other way around as one prefer. Splendid work Stefan. I do wish you and yours a Happy and Healthy 2004 from the Netherlands....Best regards Harry
