dear mary,
very interesting to read about your sadness, but i feel it is wrongly diected. i don't feel and i am not at the disadvantage using mostly film/slides and scanner. the most limiting element in this chain surely is the end of the web, the monitor with its old fashioned and miserable line structure.
mind you, i am surprised time and again to see what my mini digital, a sony dsc-f77 (!) is capturing. but even at 4 mpx it has its limits in gradation and brilliance and contrast. if you like to compare then we should meet at the high end machines. and then, i don't want to give up working in pictures without the help of electricity and a computer, and i am convinced that it will take a long time to see digital photography to take over like the cd has finished the vinyl record. i mean photography not the billions of party and sundowns and tourist trash with the specks of children in front the royal palace.

wonderful your recitation of shelley's 'ozimandius' which i rather like to relate to the sculturor's work than to the subject matter of the development of the technology of photography.

i greatly appreciate such conversation and discussion and prefer this by far to the rather bleak sort of short and shortissimo statement like ...nice picture.
thank you very much, mary and
kind regards

Charlie,

I appreciate your perspective (as explained in this thread to Antonio). However, I do feel a certain degree of sadness for you and other film and darkroom photographers who end up at such a disadvantage here (on an on-line forum that is overwhelmed with digital cameras - mine included ;) ) - sometimes I look at your (as in the group) work and wish I could see it in person because - scanneed prints do lose a lot (unless you like to play in PS)... I am not suggesting you start playing in PS only saying it is a shame really that you get judged by digital standards.

This one seems a candidate for some take on Ozymandius. Time moves on the statue tumbles and new life rests there... and so forth and so on... ;)

Take care.

Ozymandius
by Percy Bysshe Shelley
First Published in 1817
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I met a traveller from an antique land,
Who said--"Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desart . . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandius, King of Kings,
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

I love this photo Charlie. Anyone of us who have, or have had, young children, know this scene so well (Can we go now?)and you captured it beautifully. Don't crop anything! The extension of the curve to the top of the image is an important part of the movement I think. Regards, Tim.

A very beautiful image, well composed and superbly captured.
I like the way the little girls is resting on the big foo.
I also like this foto the way it is. No cropping!!!
A fantastic capture, Charlie

Nice composition and tones. I'd like to see a little more sharpness in the girls face (but maybe it's just the small size of reproduction).
Good concept.

David

to all: thank you very much for your very positive and encourageing comments.
in detail:
teresa, only if i want to and/or there is no way around i allow my reflection to show up in such a picture.

antonio, working with film/scanner/web we have to accept certain limits in contrast as well as fineness of colour hues. i like to stick to photography rather than rework every such detail in ps to create a picture that we see with our eyes but that is not there on film/slide in the web.

ivan, thank you very much. most of what i commented to antonio also applies to your proposal. and i do not, not at all agree to your cropping suggestion because thereby the most interesting hint to the size of the sculpture's foot is lost.

thank you again and
best regards

A fotografia é interessantíssima, mas penso que sobra espaço em cima e embaixo, e também penso que a criaça deveria ter sido tratada digitalmente para aumentar o contraste, Juntei uma sugestão de crop e tratamento da parte, com aumento da nitidez.
