My opinion is pretty much in line with the others here. I really like the composition but not the lighting/time of day. It's a good shot, but would be excellent with better light. You should try to capture it again at sunrise/sunset (whichever puts the sun at the most favorable angle), during a storm (picture the sun lighting the buildings with a dark grey background storm), or at night. I would also choose a slide film for this. Which depends on lighting. For this exact shot Astia 100F. Under more favorable lighting Provia 100F or Velvia 50. For a night shot, Provia 100F.
Catch this with the right light on Provia and you'll have an award winner. I'm curious to know if you stumbled on this location/perspective, or planned it out. Good eye in either case!
Regarding your question on the Canon 70-200 (posted under one of my images): The f/4L and f/2.8L are virtually identical in all respects. Their MTF scores and curves are very similar, with the f/4L actually edging out the f/2.8L (barely). The f/4L is lighter and costs less, and the f/2.8L gives you an extra stop. That's the only difference.
Due to weight you might want a tripod collar for the f/2.8L, while you can shoot the f/4L off a camera mounted to a tripod.
I got the f/4L to save money and because I knew I would be carrying it a lot.
Thanks for your comment on my image. Hope this helps!

Kelly,
I am attaching a fix I did, I leveled out the lighting and tried to bring out some detail in the dark areas.

Hi Kelly, Chicago is a hard town to photograph as I have tried...but you do have to get those early morning or late evening shots. up to 2 hours before sunset or 2 hours after sunrise is best. With angle you are shooting at here the sun would be just about right. I love Chicago and so does my wife who is from the UK. Now keep trying to capture this image at different times of the day. and also try some night shots about one hour after the sun sets...there is a magical blue light that will appear when there is little or no clouds in the sky and sometimes you can get a nice magenta glow at the horizon too!!! Good luck and show us what you capture. Thanks for you comment on my light house too!!

Kelly,
Nice shot of downtown. I like the composition you choose here. I think I would brighten the river part a bit more as your losing detail there. Overall this is a nice shot.
As far as my going digital.. Humm something about ripping the film from my dead fingers comes to mind? just kidding? Actually when the cost of digital justifies the switch then I will. As of now it?s not cost effective for the switch, the cheapest digital camera that will equal what I am doing with film is well over 2k and I can shoot a lot of film for that amount. Since I develop my own film it cost me pennies to shoot film so digital is not there yet.

I like the picture overall, Kelly, though I would second everyone, including you, with the thought of a polarizer. Great picture otherwise! Regards!

Hi, This was taken from the merchandise mart. I agree I should have used a polarizer. On the orginal shot there is no line on the left side.

Kelly, good compostition. I like the way you used the river and bridges to bring the eye into the photograph.
As pointed out above the lighting seems too bright perhaps washing out the color a bit. Polarizer may have helped with that-would darken and deepen the sky to help separate it from the buildings.
I would guess this was taken from behind a window which is what caused the streak down the right side? Again, the polarizer would have helped.
This is such a great shot compositionally that I would return at a different time of day-early morning or late afternoon-to see what that would bring.

Ungewoehnliche Sicht von Chicago. Der untere Teil des Bildes versinkt aber zu sehr in Dunkelheit. Danke für deine Commentare. Ich arbeite mit PS 7.01. Gruss Gerhard

I am not from Chicago, but was just in the Sears Tower visiting on friday. I would love to know where you took this shot from. (good to know for next visit.) This is a really good shot and I like your composition a lot. It seems a bit bright at the top and there is a line going vertically from the top left. Not sure what that might be from, but perhaps the scan? Overall a great job!
