About This 19th century schooner which seems to be sailing in opposite directions at once was inspired by Magritte's painting "The Seducer." While science debates if the arrow of time can travel in more than one direction, there are some occasions, such as gazing at stars and galaxies in the night sky, when we can, in effect, look backward in time. Check out Orion or the Big Dipper and you are seeing images of stars as they appeared millions of years ago. Some may no longer even exist. Alternate title: "Schooner or Later." Comments appreciated!

Again you have done an exceptional job of drawing.. not just a second look, but a 22nd look... in fact a studious apraisal. This is quite beautiful, as well as thought provoking. Another excellent example of "look closely.. all is not what you think you see."

Superb idea...already the claudes remind me at Magritte's work.
The tittle has no importance for me, it's the image that must seduce.

Mirror mirror in the schooner, take me to Spain... no, Africa...no, Spain... I want to stick my finger in the foreground and swirl the zig zag ripples...

Craig Garland   {K:27077} 10/9/2003
Jim; philosophy and poetry aside, I absolutely love the rippled reflections of the ship(s) you've created in the foreground. They stand in stark contrast to the rigid structure of the ship(s). Sci-Fi often considers time as the 4th dimension, but that has always seemed much too simplistic to me. It seems to me that time may be a totally nebulous and infinite "dimension" if it can be called a dimension at all. Your alternate title is a cool play on words;>). Nice work. BTW, I'm not looking for Ratings on my photos these days, but still really appreciate comments. Cheers. Craig

Another beauty Jim.Time as a ship is a good metaphor I think. My pet peeve related to your time series, is the rat race. I own a business, Im a father, musician, try to take care of my house and so on. In most cases I am multitasking with the end result, that I do two or three things out of four poorly. Most of the photos Ive taken, are taken, before going to a business accounts, on the way to pick up my daughter etc. I feel like the Cheshire rabbit. Id write more, but I dont have time.:)

Several of your images have made me think of Magritte, especially this one. Excellent, clever work! Real genius at play!!!

Ready for all winds... I like the symmetrical composition very much, and the repeated pair of clouds is just perfect IMO. What does not seem right to me comes below. I am sure that the half used of the boat lies straight in the water, but it seems to me that applying some nautical creative freedom and rotating the two halves slightly (in the direction to straighten the masts (although this is not the issue (just a reference point (and no more parenthesis)))) might improve the illusion. That could also solve the problem that the ship appears to lie quite low in the water right about midship. The water surface is gorgeous, but maybe a little flashy in the presence of the sky which has more the character of a pencil sketch. The transluscent sails are beautiful!

Excellent idea and techniqe as in most of your images. I may agree with Chris about the sky, cloud tops look slightly overexposed (maybe it's just JPEG conversion) but the reflections are really exceptional. Great job.

Hi Jim,
Another thought provoking and beautifully produced image.
I like the way you reflected the schooner and the water but not he sky. Cool!
I love the alternative title too!
Kind regards, Chris.
P.S. My faith helps me to look infinitely backwards, to an eternity past, in which God alone existed. It also enables me to look infinitely forwards, with a confidence and sense of expectation, to an endless age in which God will be far from alone!
P.P.S. Thanks for your kind comments on Gold Hill.

Wow, I like this picture! It's beautiful to look at. The reflections come right at you, while the ship is going right and left. This reminded me of a story I read when I was a kid in Argentina, about this ship sailing during at night during a wild storm in the North Sea (the story was in German), and one of the sailors was hurt. His foot was amputated when something fell on him. The ship's doctor operated in the dark, reattaching the foot, and was successful. Next morning, when the storm was over, the sailor tried to walk, but couldn't get anywhere. His foot had been reattached backwards. As a kid I thought that was incredibly funny. I once was sewing a long-sleeve blouse, and without noticing it (how I didn't notice beats me) I sewed one the right way, the other upside down. I tried to put on the blouse before noticing. That also was funny (although my mum laughed more than I).

So much for stories. I don't know this painting by Magritte - I'll look it up. Isn't it that time travels in loops?

Looking backwards in time at night when looking at the sky is something my husband and I just LOVE to do.

Take care,

Ursula

Looks like a double ender to me. One question, does it get longer if it sails in both directions at the same time? Very well put together, good composition and color.
Great Work!!
