Your photo "Stormy day in Alaska" works much better with lower contrast because the details in the mountains are given a gentle painterly effect that makes it look like an older photo. They also have the small black sliver of foreground shoreline to counterbalance against. In B&W, I don't think the water here is enhanced by the effect, in fact I thought it was sand when I quickly first looked at it. (i.e. the water detail is already subtle, perhaps too much so to cope with it). I do like the composition and the ripples make an excellent feature to draw your eye through the scene.
