About Taken at our church in a suburb of Tokyo on "Respect for the Aged" day. There are some grand old faces among them. The lady in the wheelchair was 99 when I took this, 100 now!

John, the system doesn't DISPLAY ratings unless there are at least two. Probably some kind, well-meaning person gave the one that came top a "7." There may be a few like that. Usually someone else comes along to restore a sense of reason! This is one of my favourite shots. The oldest lady has since died, leaving a small fortune to the church, and a good friend of mine went into nursing home and is now nearing the end... Hey, thanks for all the great comments! You're boosting my average!!

960 views and 6.4 rating? Wow! And a wonderful image it is too, so full of expression and character.

This one came up on top when I sorted your images by "most views". But when I sorted them by "top rated", the first image was one that hadn't been rated. Erm...

Actually, I don't mind the prominent background. While there are a few distracting objects there (the fans and speakers in particular), I feel it's a part of this photo in that it reveals more about its subjects: it tells us a little more about who they are, what they believe and why they're together. I would like to have seen the camera moved a bit more to the right, just so your subjects are in the exact center of the aisle, but take that with a grain of salt as it's coming from a symmetry freak. The objects from the bench on the left could have been removed as well.

A great photo with some great personality/ies!

Thanks for the constructive comment, Kim. I only had my 21/4 lens with me that day, so it was that or lose the shot. I agree that the background could have been less distracting with some nice softening... but on the other hand, those lines do tend to lead the eyes down into those faces. So I think it works in a way. I was still having problems shooting level (I later bought a bubble level that cured this problem), and if you look carefully you can see some artifacts where I corrected the perspective slightly.

Group shots can be hard, as you're so far away from the subject to get everyone in that sometimes the interest can be lost. Not so with this image. Each face has so much detail and character... the B&W really helps to make each person stand out in this group. With a 21mm the DOF is pretty much at infinity for shots like this, which is somewhat too bad, as the background seems to have a lot of lines that are distracting and disturb the flow (what I'm trying to get across is that less DOF would have made this even better).
Thanks for sharing.

This may have been slightly stronger square, but that is just a gut feeling and it works this was as well.
