About Praying mantis on a hedge in front of our house. He followed me with his head wherever I moved the camera, so it was a bit of a challenge to strike a balance between shutter speed and aperture. BTW - handheld (which I almost never do)

Hello Bob,
Good quality shot of this mantis face. The background is very complimentary of the subject. Looks like you got fairly good DOF for F/11. Can't image hand held at 1/90th shutter, I have to totally rely on the use of a tripod, just not as steady as I used to be.
About the use of Extension Tubes on my 300mm lens. The tubes do not change image magnification for a given lens to subject distance. The only thing the tubes do is increase the minimum focus of the lens (but you no longer can focus to infinity). With the use of the complete set of tubes (3 tubes=68mm) I can focus my 300mm in a range from about 2 to 5 feet. You can use the tubes singularly or in different configurations depending on the focusing range you need. The normal minimum focus for the 300mm is about 3-1/2 feet. The reason I use the 300mm is for the following reasons: I can keep a good working distance from the subject so as not to scare them off, the 300mm is one of the sharpest lens made by Nikon and because of the 300mm's relatively shallow DOF, it produces the great backgrounds that I prefer. Hope this info has helped. If not e-mail me for more details.

An insect model that in some way participates rather than flying away. Ive had all sorts of things happen - grasshoppers moving around blades of grass as you follow them, the usual escapist butterflies. Good to hear that at least some (dragonflies too I guess) cooperate! how did you crop this? If you cropped the right I would put some back in to get that antenna back.

BTW what do you mean by diffusion screen with reference to digital. Is this pre or post capture? I have little knowledge of old darkroom work, but I was under the impression that a diffusion screen meant a fine material placed between the negative and photo sheet to soften the shot. How was it applied in this case? Also, strange to want to pull back on sharpness, but it appears to have worked well ehre giving the colors a nice smooth progression.
