As a potter I disagree that the pots in the background distract from the image.
I would, however, have made the main focus be the spinning pot and not the potters sweatter.

Agree with the others about the background. Shallower depth of field would have helped. You could also try to dodge and blur it out. What bothers me more is the lack of a strong focal point. Neither his face nor his hands seem to be sharp. I'd go with either sharp focus on the face, especially the eyes, or focus on the hands. Need a shutter speed that will freeze any movement of the hands but capture the blur of the pot as it spins.

You have captured the intensity of this potter. The fact that the jar is not in clear focus gives the sense of it spinning as he is working on it. I do find the background a little distracting and perhaps a little less depth of field would blur it out some putting more focus on the potter.
