About
Being so close to the coast, the California Red Wood forests frequently see strong winds blow. When that happens, the trees are often stressed to their max. This is what happens when the trees can no longer withstand the wind. Either they break off like this tree or blow over with the root ball coming out of the ground. The downed trees are left laying in the forest. It will take more than 100 years for them to decompose back to dirt but in the mean time other plants and animals benefit from them.
