And no, I did not have to climb a tree to make this shot :)
There were some trees leaning heavily over the water, and the water was about 10 feet below this viewpoint. You can get an impression of the environment in this image:

To complete the answers to your questions: it was just available light, the shot was taken around noon. The light measurement was a bit of a gamble because I had no experience with this kind of shots.
I measured the (available) light in the brightest part with 1/2 stop underexposure, which turned out to be a good choice. However the scan of the slide looked rather dull so I applied some unsharp masking to make the branches stand out better, and to enhance the reflections.

Hermen,
I didn't even look at the thumbnail - I selected this for the title - it is a wonderful title.
I like this - I love trees and water in combination - I love so many things - the world is a beautiful place.
Okay - the gush is out of the way.
This appears to be shot either in a tree or from a balcony. Did you use a flash or was this with available light? The branches look a little bright - but they do stand out which might be more important in this image.
