Thanks Nick, I think the good lens really helps at high ISO as well. This camera is a great one for all conditions I have encountered so far. It is solid and easy to use. I agree about your feelings of giving the youth something to always have in music. There were some great kids that played that night from 6 to 70 years in age. Be well, stan

Hi Stan!
I am also very enthousiastic about that clarity of the 40D at high ISOs. This is not an easy thing to accomplish at all and so it shows the very good quality of the camera. So, just be happy fot it!
I also find it always a good thing to see young people joyfully dealing with music, learning to play some instrument, making their first steps into this. It shows me that human beings, and especially young human beings, need not only those more "material" things but also other things like for example music. It can turn into a catastpophe when teaching young people to be only interested in how they will get an easy fat position and make money in their lives. This one sided way to lead young people seems to really break their creative wings and the sense for the good, the beautiful, the subtle. So I can be only glad when I see them taking some instrument and dedicating time and appetite to learn to play it, no matter what their personal taste might be.
Hope to see his name in lights, that is! ;-)
Cheers!
Nick

Hi Nick, hope you are well and the software was useful for you. I have not been around here much either. I am impressed at how clean the high ISO's are in the 40D. I have gotten some great high ISO shots with little noise and good detail. This young fiddler was well on his way to a successful music career. Just fun to see the love of music passed on to the young ones. Be well, Stan

Hi Stan, after a long absence for which you hopefully excuse me.
Many thanks for the info about the shot and the building. Such a noiseless appearance for ISO 1600 is really an achievement by itself!
About the fear and angst before such an appearance, I know exactly what you arfe talking about. Still having that afer so many years when playing with the guys in some pub around here. It's like wishing to be invisible. ;-)
Cheers!
Nick

Thanks Judson, this was a good candidate for a conversion. I really like adding some tones and mood in these settings. It was window light and candid, he heard the shutter and then looked at me. He was one great fiddle player!! Be well, Stan

Thanks Keith,we have some interesting cross sections of home grown talent displayed in our area. A college town is the major center of influence and just a lot of great people in the surrounding areas that do things beside complain in the winter. I have been surprised by many young and old with the music. I am going to photograph some Irish Dancers Monday. A little bit of something for every body. be well, Stan

Thanks Nick,, as I watched him I remembered the piano recitals that I played in when I was young and the butterflies that invaded my private world. I love the fear and angst before any stage performance, Especially when it is someone else! LOL!! I had to bump my ISO to 1600 to get a descent shot in the dying light of the day through a window. We were in an old brick school gym that was built in the early years of 1900's. It has been restored by the community as a gathering place for events. I have more shots that I will be posting in time. Be well, Stan

A nicely done one, Stan! The range of grey hues gives it again a strong feeling for the relief, the plasticity of the face, cloths, etc. The white wall was a very good background forcontrast too, and especially the corner adds interest for its more original look. (A flat wall hardly raises the strength of the depth.)
The exposure is just about perfect to me, just as the DoF also is. Good details and good clarity. I can imagine a whole small series with this subject.
Cheers!
Nick
