It will not be possible (I already assume) to get the effect in such a strength, Paul. It will be probably weaker or even just subtle, and this is exactly my case. (Still prefer the subtle phasing of Eddie Van Halen instead of the extreme digital sound phasing. ;-))

But don't be so sure that film can't be used for more "extreme" images without special processing. I have some images here of which nobody of my freinds coukld imagine that it was just shooting with film. I'll be posting them some day too.

Cheers!

Nick

With film, I don't think it'll be possible Nick - there's too much latitude to begin with. This process over-sharpens and also pinches contrast and boosts saturation. That's a bit much to ask from film stock, unless you include special processing in the equation.

Which in my case (film) would mean to get a rather high contrast film (high ISO?) with an enhanced responce for middle tones and shadows, and low to medium overexposure under an extremely exact focus and narrow DoF. I assume that this could go in that direction.

Lemme see what I can get.

Cheers!

I don't think any camera is designed for it, but my own guess would be to set sharpness and contrast settings to the MAX an see what you get.

Thanks a lot for the useful input, Paul! I surely will take a look at the draganizer for trying to see of its algorithms can be mapped back to camera settings. It would be nice to get such shots right out if the camera.

Cheers!

Wow, Nick, thank you so much for that comprehensive critique!

This is a variant of a Photoshop action invented by a Polish photographer, Mr. (?) Dragan. It is now available in downloadable actions. Just do a google search for draganizer and you'll find actions and even video tutorials. It involves using a high-pass filter and pushing contrast far beyond the norm to accentuate textures and wrinkles. Using this effect on a fair-skinned model would just make the shot look dark, but for someone with character, like this chap...POP!

Not that I didn't feel that special sexy (but not at all cheap) touch of your girls, Paul, but again: Just place something different in a pile of similar things, and be sure everybody is turning their eyes to that. ;-)

The unimaginable degree of fidelity of details is in a marriage with a somewhat exaggerated contrast, as I see on the textures of his clothes, that are in a slight and vague transition to a metallic kind of appearance. On his hair I see the same. It is the quite sophisticated version of "hardness" of details that Fabio really misuses to the endth degree - but here it does something special! It makes that highly detailed face stand out ans look real and also a bit"over-enhanced" in the sense of some movie poster for example. To tell you the truth for some reason I was reminded of the movies (especially those lovely comedian movies) of the 1960's by this image. You know, "It's a crazy crazy world", or "Top Kapi". Really, I get that kind of nostalgia for Peter Ustivov or Peter Sellers with this one.

I think that your hues do much for that. Good saturation of rich colors but also that special something that many images of those times have.

BTW, why did the color palette get that special appearance? Is that the combination with the slightly perceivable shine of metallicity? I try to get this look since months but... in vain!

Cheers!
