A background doesn't have to be either perfect in focus or completely softened out. It can be anything between the two extremes.
Having said that, the brown-green object on which the plastic leaf lies is a candle. The visible part of its surface is more or less in focus but still one can't recognize what it is if one doesn't know the object, because the image shows only a very small portion of it. In this case it simply looked OK to me for getting some additional, secondary thing on the image that would break the monotony. But from your comment I see that it should be more of it because it seems to generate interest to know what it is. Next time, I guess.

The foreground is perfect with nice details and good direction. On background I'm not sure, neither enough details to be recognized nor totally blurred . Regards Aziz
