mate.. don’t ask me.. I have asked myself many a time as to the beginnings of such things the wellspring whatever.. and to this day I have no real clue.. mind you once the idea is in my head I can then work on it.. but back in the old days when I made these things late 80's to the early 90's things just use to bubble up.. I guess as an answer to an unwritten question in my head.. quite often, I would make the prints or shot the film or whatever with nothing in mind and then eventually they would coalesce on the board that I used to lay stuff out on to make the collages,. Then they would invariably begin a life of their own and the work would suggest itself to me .. other ideas might suggest themselves and so on.. I cant remember why I decided to use this technique on 20X16” sheet of paper as it seems at first wasteful… I don’t remember having a preconceived notion in my head in order to make this work either and so it’s a bit weird that one should “waste” a great stack of photographic paper without any aim in mind.. however once the work began to take shape the immediacy of its power became apparent. What bugs me is that making collages is a “skill” I once possessed and now it has left me entirely. Owen O’Meara has suggested we have a competition around making some collages and I find that idea attractive and may well get cracking.. I just have to figure out what I have to say first… bleedin’ ‘ell every time a germ of an idea creeps out of the old grey matter it seems to die on the vine.. I would like to use the technique again for Self Rising.. just need clearance from the tower on that.. stand by.
