Peter,
This was a really flat scene in terms of exposure. I exposed so that the brighter parts of the fence fell about on Zone VI; I wanted as much information as possible for emphasizing the texture. This was a digital shot so I just adjusted exposure until it looked right on the lcd. In Photoshop, I expanded the tonal scale so that, highlights were near pure white, and the spaces between boards were dead black. I gave the overall density curve, after that, a small foot and shoulder. I dodged the lower left corner just a tad. More than you wanted to know ;)
