You need to dictate to the camera what you want
not it feels like giving you.
Close Up mode is for Macro,it`s Priority is dof
hence you got very good dof BUT you were lucky!!
Aperture Priority is the mode that most Bird shooters uses with ISO 320 and upwards if the light calls for it.If there is noise use the noise remover.
Nice job Parehan but as you have seen it`s very difficult at times.
Continious Focus is a must because even when the bird is perch on a tree the slightest movement will throw the focus hence the sharpness,

My goodness from the thumbnail I had 'no idea ' what this image was ...but it is a wonderful motion of these brave gulls that seem to always flock together .. I love it !!

Great capture, parehan. Your focal length and exposure worked very well to bring them all into focus even though they probably have distance between, yet it was a shallow enough depth of field to have blurred out the background. Good job!
