About This version is a repost with some slight changes in the crop, removes the blue colour cast, and includes the environmental context. The only things deleted from the environment were the specular highlights caused by the many feathers floating on the water surface.

Tim, I do not use active D-lighting since I shoot in RAW and can have more control over dynamic range in my postprocessing. The active D-lighting is a useful feature when shooting Jpeg and using the camera adjustments to avoid post processing. What it does is under-expose slightly to preserve highlights and then applies the tonal remapping for the shadows detail. In this shot, I under-exposed to keep the highlights (like D-lighting) and then used curves to lower midtone and shadow values - just the opposite of what D-lighting would do in the shadows. I wanted to increase drama by almost eliminating the surrounding detail.

Congrats on the award!...just a question...are you using the "active D lighting" in this shot? It certainly has the contrast to merit it. I am still experimenting with that setting myself and find that in the darker areas there is some loss of contrast in its attempt to maintain detail...just the same that is not hard to recover in PS afterwards.

Love them both Eb... As a guy who doesn't possess the skills to do a bunch of detailed editing with PS or any other program, I can appreciate the qualities of both postings. I rarely do much to alter my posts with the exception of maybe tweaking some saturation or contrast, so truly appreciate the initial post as a beautiful photograph. The second, however, becomes a true piece of art once the fine points are brought forward and the other secondary subject matter is minimalized or eliminated. As I said, both are spectacular in their own right for different reasons and for different qualities, but they are both very worthy posts on their own. Great work!
