About At the suggestion of Leslie Coehlan and Carole Bradford I am resubmitting my "Study in Red" as a Sepia toned flower. I am a complete novice in PhotoShop, so I have probably really goofed this up, but it is an experiment. I would appreciate any and all comments (ratings are sure not necessary) to help me improve. This use of posting Photos is a great tool for learning, so thanks Leslie and Carole for all of your help. Regards.

Sepia...1 a : the inky secretion of a cuttlefish b : a brown melanin-containing pigment from the ink of cuttlefishes
2 : a print or photograph of a brown color resembling sepia
3 : a brownish gray to dark olive brown color
I don't understand your use of magenta or red in a sepia image? This is what I think of Sepia...

this is how i do sepia... image - mode - grey scale - image - mode - duotone (then you can chose from a tritone or quatone.) afterwards play with your levels and curves... regards.

This is so much better, Jim! The sepia works well on this flower! Makes for a very dramatic photo! Once again I agree totally with Leslie. Good work!

Jim,

Went to have a look at the colour version - they both have their strengths, and are both lovely images. While your nice DOF and lighting are more evident (IMO, but I'm no expert) in the colour, your aims in converting to Sepia for the petals seem to have been achieved nicely here.

I think you've got it...a totally different feel from the original...you don't notice any of the negatives about the flower...this just gives the impression of a spent flower, yet the center stands so strong and detailed...perhaps just a slight desaturation of the red...actually maybe not...I think you've done this flower an excellent justice as it is...excellent work!
