About
A few years ago the town of Ottawa, Illinois had some trouble. The town set up a series of religious themed paintings for Christmas and some folks from the Big Smoke (borrowed that from Ian) Chicago came down to protest. Something about, “Separation of Church and State.” Funny thing is, there is no real, firm doctrine of separating church and state in American law. It was spoken of in some letters by Jefferson and Congress is instructed to pass NO national religion... but there is no real solid law declaring the separation of the State from the church. The Supreme Court has taken it upon itself to make law rather than decide which laws are Constitutional. In simple terms… I would ask, “If separation is the law of the land… why is it ok for a church hall to have a voting booth during elections?” More often than not, the trouble arises from a small group of people with personal issues they want to force on the general public. I am a conservative Republican. I am NOT a religious hardliner. Many people who know me well often say, “How can you be conservative and still so socially liberal?” It’s because I understand human nature. I understand shifting and sliding social change… I am a Republican who believes in gun control, a woman’s right to have an abortion… and the right of some bloke to toss up a religious themed painting during Christmas. Providing… that bloke went to 301 W. Madison for legal permission.
