Ka Whenua Roimata (land of tears).
Encountered this name for the first time when I took the photo. I thought it was a reference to the lives lost crossing the alps to get jade (pounamu) from the other side in pre european times.
But I read it is a modern name, and refers to the treaty of waitangi. Signed in 1840 it was an agreement between the british crown and maori chiefs to sort out who controlled what if the europeans were to settle here. Our founding document, it was of course reinterpreted or ignored over the years as the europeans got established but finally sorted out for the local tribe here in my parts of the country quite recently.
Last year the local tribe, kai tahu, having finally had the treaty honoured, gave this tract back.
