Perhaps a result of the exaggerated perspective/depth due to usage of wide angle, that lets the cseagulls look too far away and thus indirectly makes them smaller?

You mean the white thingies on the water, I assume? They are seagulls. Not very recognizable, I guess, which makes me re-think about the image.
