Thanks for your comments James.
The "falling up" effect is caused by the flash firing at the start of the exposure and the blurry bit happenig after that with the fairly long exposure time. I should have used "rear curtain sync" I suppose.

Yeah well I hung around for about 5 minutes waiting for the leaves to fall in the right place then I decided it would be a lot more controllable to actually drop them myself.
