About
America. Love U.S. Hate U.S. Whatever. We were born of the crucible of war. We have hardened our character on the iron of battle. Some day, one day the world will shift and U.S. Yanks will vanish… ne’er to be remembered…
Have we done enough in the world to make it a better place? That is arguable. Have we done enough to make it a worse place? That is arguable.
In the U.S. we have “Uncle Sam” as a symbol of the nation. The Brits have “John Bull.” What character do you have in your country?
Uncle Sam ready to wage war….
Did I tell you this nation, my nation, was born of battle and war?
Always nice to get a good word from Over the Pond. Yep, we need to look back after centuries to evaluate the impact. And what do I, as a Yank, see as great American contributions to the world? Baseball as it is known today. The baseball cap! Gotta love that one! John Deere logo, M*A*S*H, salted in the shell peanuts, sweet corn, viewmaster toys. Interesting you say Bill Hicks. My oldest son (now 28) introduced me to Bill Hicks while he was in college a few years back. He also introduced me to the band Everclear. My second fave band ever (the Beatles come in first... I saw them on Ed Sullivan in 1963) Everclear as a band is heavy on lyrics. And yes... my list could go on and on... and Oh!!! Jello!!!! kekekekekeke...... But then, you blokes did give us Ludites! In a strange anti/pro-internet way I love Ludites....
Great, Jim! And a really interesting about... personally speaking I think the US has done immense good for the world AND some things that would make the Statue of Liberty blush... when a nation becomes as powerful as the US has been for the past 60-70 years or so, its actions become amplified and distorted because its cultural and political sway is so pervasive across the world, touching just about everyone and everything to some degree. For future generations, it looks like China and India will have enormous impact judging from the way the world is starting to shift at the moment. The trouble is, we are too close to the action... to get any sense of perspective on things we would need to be able to travel 3-400 years into the future and look at the legacy of the US with a sense of detachment... but for now, here's a short list of things that I love about your country... well, it's given the world jazz, blues and rock n' roll... the movies, for all intents and purposes... the Fantastic Four and Spiderman... Marilyn Monroe... Bill Hicks... the book 'A Confederacy Of Dunces' by John Kennedy Toole... Bob Dylan... the list goes on and on...
