About I was rather lucky to have such background that disappears in the haze since it is exactly what makes the tree seem so unique here.

I would love to read your comments.

Thanks a lot, Goran!

As already said, it has been a big prtion of good luck for me to be there exactly at that time. The haze did most of the work I had to do other wise. So I am only glad that nature was so cooperative this time. ;-)

Thanks a lot again and all the best!

Excellent composition! Usually you would have to fade the background manually, but this haze/fog makes it for you, and makes this tree look really special! Great landscape, go on like this!

Hi Andre!

Yes, I also noticed that the subject was often discussed here. I can think of some possibilities about the reasons that lead to taking half-hearted comments on the front page many times, but since a new trend indeed seems to establish itself I can only be happy with this development.

So it seems too that the overall quality of the forum grows steadily too. Nice thing to see!

Best wishes,

Nick

Hi Nick,
The subject of "what gets a critique on the front page" has come up in the Usefilm Forum a few times. It has been mentioned by a few people that it can be a little disheartening to see half-hearted comments go up on the front page when so many well intentioned helpful comments go unnoticed. I truly hope that there is some human element to the choice in this matter.
Let's hope the new trend continues.

Many thanks for the nice and detailed comment, David! I am happy with that cow too - so there are some animals that do care for the wishes of the photographer! ;-)

Take care too,

Nick

Thank you very much for the nice comment, Andre! It has been a big chunk of good luck too, to be there at the right time. And so the haze did the job for me and eliminated the similar color of the background :-)

As of the critiques I really thought that those for the front page were chosen by using some random number generator, but as the time passes by I am inclined to believe that there is some kind of preference for comments that are more enthusiastic. Anyway, I hope I can keep on commenting in a way that does say something more than simply "I like it very much", since otherwise I would find myself somewhere near the center of the universe, believing that what *I* like is reason enough for commenting the work of somebody else, and not even mentioning what I like and why ;-)

A comment should be a reason for that kind of mental cooperation and exchange, that can bring the thoughts of people much closer to each other than any kind of monotonous "Bravo, you're the best". In other words, if anything we post is only great and perfect, then we don't need any forum for postings and discussion for getting better, since anything we do is already perfect.

I have to thank you very much for helping to keep my moral high on this subject!

Best wishes,

Nick

Thank you very much for the so nice and detailed comment, Gabriela! And especially for telling about your impression with the mooving backgrounds of old films - I start thinking of it! I'll try to make some more of this kind and enhance this impression if I can. Let's see if the main actors get a bit more weight then.

Cheers,

Nick

Yes, it would be better to turn a bit to the left for letting the half shrub completelly off image, and thus making the tree absolutely dominant here, Doyle! Thank you very much for the comment and the idea!

Best wishes,

Nick

Very nice Nick!
Another beautiful "lone tree" image which turns out to be much more than just a lone tree. Once again, no problem at all with a similar coloured background :)
Nice job on this one.
By the way... I have to congratulate you on having one of your critiques being featured on the front page today. It is a good critique that offers some advice and praise at the same time. In my opinion, that is the kind of review that should be up in that spot all the time. Unfortunately, for some reason, it doesn't always work out that way.

I love the choice of angle and background! It gives me the strange impression of a background moving like in old movies which were shot in studios.Very interesting use of foreground versus background, the detachment of the tree as main actor is very well thought!

This is superb Nick. I'm gazing and lost in the shot. The ONLY thing I can imagine improving it would have been an ever so slight shift to the left so the half shrub on the border is eliminated. Nicely done!

Very nicely composed, Nick! I like the diagonal of the hillside, and the background is perfect to contrast with the tree. Well seen and captured.
